There is an active social calendar at Benet’s, with a wide number of free-of-charge events organised by the JCR each term. The ‘St. Benet’s Smoker’, a variety show comprising songs, sketches, and stand-up comedy, is a chance for Benetians to invite their friends for an evening of hilarity and talent. Another opportunity to invite guests is the termly ‘ChariTea’, a special afternoon tea with lots of cakes and other treats, raising money for charity. In the summer we regularly have Pimms & Croquet in the garden, then later in the term the all-night barbeque & bonfire takes place out on Port Meadow. The highlight of each term is the JCR Party, a themed affair which takes over the entire hall. Michaelmas term sees the black-tie Christmas Party, followed by the ‘Benetian Venetian’ masquerade in Hilary, before we finish off the academic year with the celebrated St. Benet’s Hall Garden Party.
Benet’s has a strong presence in university drama. Recently our students have performed in well-received productions at theatres such as the Oxford Playhouse and the Keble O'Reilly. Some years there have been entries from Benet’s into the freshers-only Cuppers Drama competition, which takes place during Michaelmas Term. This is always a great opportunity for freshers to get their foot in the door of the wider university dramatic community. The St Benet’s Smoker continues to be a popular social fixture, as does the garden play, which is put on in Trinity Term by the Benet’s Dramatic Initiative.
