Service Times and Vacation Closures

Michaelmas Term 2020

Dear All,

With a somewhat heavy heart, I am writing to let you know about the Chapel and its use during lockdown. As you will be aware, the UK government has asked all places of worship to close during the period 5th Nov - 2nd December. The Catholic Bishops have accepted this (although, quite rightly, they asked for evidence of risk in places of worship, since all faith communities have worked hard to make spaces for public worship Covid-secure).

For the period of lockdown, therefore:

  • the Chapel remains OPEN for private individual prayer / reflection whenever you would like to use it. Please use a mask and the sanitiser by the door
  • the daily liturgy will continue as normal, but restricted to the "Chapel community" (Niamh, Br Bede & myself)
  • Sunday Mass - I had hoped to continue with this, but it would involve the mixing of many student households indoors, and I think we need to stand in solidarity with the many other Christians and people of other faith communities who will be denied the chance of physical presence at communal worship. Therefore:
    • Sunday Mass will continue, but restricted to the "Chapel community"
    • This Sunday (Remembrance Day) we will attempt to "live stream" Mass from the Chapel on Teams (SBH-all channel). We are trying this out for the first time, and I may send round further details tomorrow following some tech-rehearsals. Niamh is - as we all know - amazing!
    • Depending on this goes, we will try to set up a more reliable live-streaming for the coming weeks
    • I will continue to post the Sunday Homilies on the website

In addition, many churches in Oxford are live-streaming services - a search on Google will probably help you find something that suits.

In particular, there is a live-streamed Mass from the Catholic Chaplaincy each day and on Sundays (

For those who will miss the Office (especially Compline) - my home community at Ampleforth live-streams the whole monastic office each day (as well as Mass) -

Please be assured that - whether near or far - we will continue to pray for you all each day!

With every prayer and blessing,

Fr Oswald
