GIVING TO ST BENET'S

Monastic Studies

St Benet’s Hall traces its descent from the medieval Benedictine and Cistercian monastic colleges of Oxford, the earliest of which was founded in 1283. The colleges aimed to provide the monks of their time with a formation in theology, much as St Benet’s does today, as and when monastic students are in residence.

We have had studying here in the last few years, monks from Ampleforth, Douai, Glenstal (Ireland), Roscrea (Ireland), St Louis (USA), Mount Angel (USA), Valyermo (USA), St Meinrad's (USA), Maylis (France), and St Ottilien (Germany); as well as other religious from England, Austria and beyond. Some have undertaken graduate studies for the DPhil, others undergraduate or 2nd BA studies for a BA in theology, or BTheol (specifically for priestly ordination). It is also possible to take the ordination course at Blackfriars, the Studium Generale of the Dominicans in England, which is just down the road on St Giles.

Senior monks are also very welcome for a term or year of sabbatical study. If they are qualified, permission may be given to use the Bodleian library and other university libraries. With a University Card, organised by the College Secretary, it is possible to arrange attendance at lectures. The Senior Tutor will arrange for tutorials for those studying in a particular field, guided by one of the many experts available in the university.
